ABOUT THE WORK

Anchored in an artistic study of Bob Flanagan and Rose’s archive and their canonical performances exploring sadism, masochism, pleasure, illness, and disability in Los Angeles in the 1980s and ’90s,  Ibarra invokes the figure of the zombie to think through disability, dehumanization, and bottomhood.  Three forlorn, milky-eyed, effeminate Zombies roam and the idyllic Northern California coast longing for eternal and abundant proximity.

Text in the video is from Bob Flanagan’s “Slave Sonnets” (1984) and is used with explicit permission from Sheree Rose and the One Archives’ Sheree Rose and Bob Flanagan papers, University of Southern California Libraries, Los Angeles, California
