ABOUT THE WORK
Hope Mohr’s Bridge Project invited Ibarra to respond to Trisha Brown’s Locus (1975). She learned the score directly from Diane Madden, Trisha Brown Dance Company’s Associate Artistic Director who has danced, directed, taught, studied and reconstructed Brown’s work. After learning the score, Ibarra viewed Locus as an attempt to define absolute exactness, dimension, and space; something akin to a code of Western grammar. Her aim was to work with and against the mapping and measurement in Trisha Brown’s Locus work. To do so, Ibarra used languid movement and guttural vocalizations of the alphabet sung to exhaustion via microphoned fans to produce a distorted, monstrous and pleasurable grammar.
